The Peg System The Peg system is based on ten phonetic sounds; some sounds are similarly produced by shaping the lips and positioning the tongue the same. The sounds produced are important in this system, not the letter or letters that make up the sound. For example number six is represented by the sound "ch"as in "chair". The "ch" sound is made in the same fashion as are: "sh,cz,j,g,tch,dg", The sound is made by pressing the top forward part of the tongue against the roof of the mouth just above the teeth while forcing a short pulse of air through the two. The same sound is produced when pronouncing each of the above. Try to develop a feel for how the sounds are produced. You may have noticed

that "g" is pronounced in two ways, as in "great" and as in "general". The "g" sound in general is the six sound. The "g" sound in great represents the seven sound which include: "k,c,g,ck". You must remember the exceptions with conscious effort. Notice the words at the right of the list. Each word follows the rules above. Each contains only one phonetic sound from the sound list, with the exception being"10", which is two numbers thus two phonetic sounds. Use the link method to remember the word list on the right. Picture planting (sow) a field of ties, then picture a huge tie around Noah's neck as he guides the animals into the ark,and Noah as being your "ma" or mother, and so on. Use these pegs the same way they are used in the exercise:Number Sound-alikes; use them to link together lists of objects and their position in the list. Also use them to remember numbers. Remember them using both the link method and phonetic sounds. That is, remember what peg words are by the words that preceed and follow a word, and remember peg words by associating numbers with sounds. If you were asked what peg follows lava, remember the association you created between lava and lip. If you were asked what peg is associated with the number 47, sound out a 4 (r) and a 7 (c,k,g), then place vowels around those letters until they trigger your memory for a peg word, in this case rock. Remembering all the peg words is not usually a simple task, but it is not overly difficult. All that is required is a couple weeks of persistence. Challenge yourself to remember the peg words so you can fluently recite them in order or out of order. Experiment using the words and sounds to remember. The reward for learning the pegs thoroughly is a greatly improved memory. Alphabet Pegs Another set of peg word which are useful are the alphabet pegs. See Table: Alphabet Pegs. Form a sound-alike then link them together or link them too the phonetic pegs and you will remember the position of each letter.
