In our look at language, a third component is writing. Writing is a skill that comes naturally following language and reading development. It is the ability to express language in graphic form. But it is much more than that. Good writing requires that you understand your audience or understand how they think. Writing involves planning, progress monitoring, checking and rechecking, each involving metacognitive activity. Learning to write well involves a large amount of metacognitive effort, as well as skilled fine motor coordination.
Understanding the development of writing systems can help us understand how writing skill develops in children. The evolution of written language through it's 4000 years or so of existence, is much like the development of writing skill through childhood. The Origins of Written
